Gran Canaria |
| The third largest but most developed of the seven islands in the Spanish-administered Canary archipelago, Gran Canaria has been billed as a 'miniature continent' because of the variety of climates and landscapes that it offers, from the big city bustle of the capital, Las Palmas, to the serenity of its lush woodlands. The north of the island is humid, boasting green valleys and volcanic craters, while the south is arid and desert-like with vast stretches of beach. The capital, Las Palmas, lies on the northeast tip of the island, between two long beaches, Las Caletas and Alcaravaneras. Tourists generally favour the southern coastline, flocking to the well-known beaches of Playa del Inglés or Maspalomas, where the sea washes soft sands and empty dunes stretch for miles. |

Arguineguin Arguineguin is an old charming fishing village located about 2 km from the touristy Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria. Arguineguin is at the south of Gran Canaria and it is said that this is the place in the world with the best micro climate and most sunny hours a year. This little village lies near El Perchel Point. Patalavaca beach has fine golden sand. It is the best area for deep sea fishing and there are the service facilities necessary for this kind of sport. There are several good fish-restaurants, harbour and boardwalk. |

Las Palmas is the busy yet pretty Capital of Gran Canaria. With its painted houses, Museo Canario, La Casa de Colon and Cathedral plus some wonderful sandy beaches close by, Las Palmas makes it an ideal central location for those who want to get more than just a sun tan out of their holiday. |

Maspalomas Maspalomas is situated on the south coast about 1˝ miles west of the more livelier Playa del Ingles and about a 40 minute drive from the airport. The resort has a 6 kilometres long beach that is one of the most beautiful on the island. Accommodation is mainly apartments with a couple of nice hotels. Nearby there is a large oasis with dense vegetation consisting of palm trees and salt marsh brushwood. Next to the oasis there is a small lagoon. The housing developments include hotels, bungalows, sports grounds, etc. which have been nicely developed. Two kilometres west of the Maspalomas lighthouse, there is Pasito Blanco beach with a yacht harbour and a tourist centre. Maspalomas offers an exiting all-year-round holiday destination aimed mainly at families. The resort has all the usual tourist attractions including a 18-hole golf course, Go-carting and two nice water parks. There's plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. Surprisingly, Maspalomas isn't as noisy as you would expect. |

Playa del Cura Situated on the south west coast of Gran Canaria, about an hour's drive from the airport at Las Palmas, is the small, quiet resort of Playa Del Cura, built on the cliff sides lining the coast. This low-key family resort is just two miles (3km) from lively, hectic Puerto Rico, the island's well-known holiday and nightlife resort, but Playa del Cura remains popular as a peaceful place to stay while granting easy access to the bright lights and amenities of its more flamboyant neighbour. Playa del Cura is on the main coastal bus route so travelling to other resorts is easy, and taxis are cheap and plentiful. The resort has two small cove beaches, Cura and Tauro, at the base of the cliffs, both covered with dark volcanic sand and pebbles and strewn with sunbeds. A short distance away is the popular stretch of the Amadores beach. |

Playa del Inglés Situated about 30 minutes drive from the airport, Playa del Inglés offers a superb beach of very fine, golden sand, gently leading to an always blue, peaceful sea. Playa del Inglés is a large development with hotels, apartments, bungalows and villa's. Playa del Inglés is by far the liveliest resort on the island and is a honeypot for the young and lively crowd. There is a vast array of shops, bars, clubs and restaurants to cater for the tourist. Warning. It can get lively. |

Puerto Morgan Situated on the south west coast, nine miles (14km) west of Puerto Rico, Puerto Morgan is one of the more up-market resorts on Gran Canaria. The town is an old fishing village that has recently started to be developed into a modern resort town but retains a Spanish feel to it. Tourism is centred around the marina which bustles with local boats, yachts and Atlantic cruisers. There are a selection of bars, shops and restaurants aimed at tourists, but the shops are less tacky than in neighbouring resorts and the restaurants serve some of the best seafood on the island. |

Puerto Rico is around an hours drive from the airport and is a modern development with apartments, hotels, villas and bungalows. The town is encircled by hills and has one of the best sunshine records on the island. The main attraction is its beautiful man-made beach with lovely soft sand imported from the Sahara. The beach has a gentle slope to the sea and is therefore ideal for young children. The resort also offers minigolf, floodlit tennis, water park, a bowling alley, horses and a yacht harbour for over 55 boats. The resort has great shops, bars and restaurants where most late-night entertainment takes place. Warning. The majority of Puerto Rico is very hilly with more steps than you could ever count. It would therefore be unsuitable to those who are less mobile and to young children in buggies. |
