Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a beautiful mountainous country, small in size but rich in ancient culture, scenic splendour, friendly people and old-fashioned warmth and hospitality. Situated in the south east of Europe on the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria is not as much a tourist destination as its Greek and Turkish neighbours to the south are. This despite the popularity of its Black Sea resorts, which are scenically captivating with their fine sandy beaches, sunny climate and safe seas and wonderfully inexpensive too. As varied as the different mountain ranges are the people who dwell in them, with distinctive customs, crafts and colourful festivals, folklore, religious beliefs and speech. Small picturesque villages welcome guests with typical warm-hearted Bulgarian hospitality, sharing age-old traditions and traditional cooking, and a delight in their pastoral environment.

Independent Bulgaria resort reviews

Albena is a blue flag winning resort, located in a picturesque and ecologically clean gulf on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, famous for its flower gardens and its closeness to Varna international airport (30 km). Temperate continental climate, vast sand beach, clean seas - your guarantee of wonderful conditions for seaside holidays from May through to October. The beach has 7km of fine golden sand, a superb range of watersports and for children, a fun fair, mini-train, mini-golf and trampolines. There is a promenade bordering part of the beach, which hosts snack and ice cream stalls. The choice of eating establishments is mainly limited to hotel restaurants although there are a few snack-style eateries , bars and tavernas on the beachfront. The menus tend to be fairly similar, usually serving traditional Bulgarian food.

Bourgas is located on the Black Sea coast in the south east of the country and is Bulgaria’s fourth largest city, boasting its own international airport and port. As well as being a centre for industry and tourism the city of Bourgas also has a number of educational institutions with a large student population which adds to the city’s artistic flavour. Not really a holiday resort but it does have some small beaches and a few nice hotels and a great Cafe culture which should suit the younger generation.

Golden Sands The resort of Golden Sands is the largest one on the Northern Black Sea coast and is just 20 km north-east of Varna. Golden Sands merges with the St. Konstantin and Elena Resort and Riviera resort. The area is famous for the purest sand on the Black Sea coast. There is a casino, several bars, mini- golf, playground, horse-carriages and attractive carts, water slides and all kinds of water sports.

Sunny Beach is the largest resort on the Black Sea Riviera and holds the prestigious Blue Flag for its very clean beach. Like many of the resorts in Bulgaria, it has been purpose-built to accommodate the tourists who flock here to enjoy the warm weather and beautiful beach. Hotels, restaurants, taverns with folklore shows, bars with floor shows, night clubs, casino, discos and cafes, providing culinary pleasures and a good mood. The semicircular bay offers calm waters - ideal for swimming and watersports. There's a tranquil park and a popular pedestrianised promenade. In fact something for everyone.

St. Konstantin Situated a mere 20km from Varna airport, St. Konstantin is the perfect location for those looking for a low-key, peaceful holiday in beautiful surroundings. St Konstantin hasn't expanded as much as its larger neighbours - Golden Sands and Albena. The resort centre is compact and is set in the middle of a glorious natural park. The wide golden beaches are interspersed with numerous rocky coves and inlets making it perfect for children wishing to explore. Watersports are available at the Marina at the southern end of the beach. There is little shopping opportunities but nearby Golden Sands and Albena should keep shopaholics happy. Evening entertainment is mainly hotel based with the bigger hotels offering discos and casinos.

Varna is Bulgaria's third largest city and the port of Varna has a rich heritage as a site of contention between the Crusaders and the Ottoman empire of long ago. More recently though, the comfortable climate and calm waters of the Varna Bay have become a draw for a cosmopolitan mix of tourists keen to luxuriate in the unique atmosphere that the mix of ancient, modern and renaissance architecture produces. Three coastal resorts nearby offer various styles of accommodation and access to the beaches.
